People and Animals of Faldonside
Nature’s Best Team: Humans, Hens & Horses
At Faldonside Eco, the land is nurtured by more than just the weather — it thrives because of the people and animals who call it home. As we continue our journey to restore, regenerate, and rewild, it’s the everyday efforts of our small team (and four-legged friends) that make the big picture possible.
A Family-Led Project with Deep Roots
Faldonside Eco is proudly run by a multi-generational family team based near Melrose, in the heart of the Scottish Borders. From soil prep to project planning, you’ll find us out in the garden, walking the woods, or welcoming workshop guests. Each generation brings a different perspective: from permaculture techniques passed down, to bold ideas for community outreach, biodiversity, and eco-education.
We believe that real change happens when people connect — to the land, to each other, and to the animals that share our home.
Welcoming Our Four-legged Residents
At Faldonside Eco its not just the humans who work hard!
Runner ducks: Our newest arrivals, a group of runner ducks are now enjoying their life at Faldonside. Nicknamed ‘Slug Patrol’, these tall ducks are truly free-range — with the run of the orchard and lots of pesky slugs and bugs to eat, they’ve quickly settled into their new routine. Their eggs? Golden-yolked and full of flavour, with zero food miles.
Horses: Our very beautiful and very clever horses continue to play a vital role in managing pastureland in a low-impact, regenerative way. Also their manure is essential to provisioning the soil health, something we are working hard to develop on site — all while charming visitors with their shiny coats and gentle eyes.
Hens: Our group of bantam hens and two handsome cockerels, Baba and Jura have been with us a long time. Everyone loves these multi-coloured, cheeky feathered friends, each with their own personality. Egg production isnt always great but they give so much more than just eggs!
Volunteer Highlights
This year, we’ve also had the pleasure of welcoming volunteers from the local area and beyond. From students and career changers to nature lovers and retired horticulturalists, everyone brings something special. Volunteers help us with planting, composting, habitat restoration, and even event hosting — and often leave inspired by what they’ve learned.
We’re currently accepting expressions of interest for Autumn and Winter 2025 placements. If you’re interested, head to our Contact Page to get in touch.
Why It Matters
At Faldonside Eco, we’re not just growing food — we’re growing community. Every egg collected, meadow grazed, or hedge planted reflects our commitment to a future where people and planet thrive together.
So whether you’re picking up a salad box, joining a course, or just walking our trails, know that there’s a hard-working team (and a few happy hens) behind every bite and bloom
