Our Market Garden

Market garden - the Walled Garden @Faldonside

Our two centuries old Walled Garden would have originally been central to the provision  of food for the estate and over the past two years we have been transforming it back into a thriving organic fruit and vegetable market garden.  Under the expert guidance of Nick Major, our permaculture expert, the garden now flourishes with carefully cultivated produce grown using sustainable, chemical-free methods.  The garden has been replanted with a heritage orchard, and an apothecary brimming with medicinal plants has been created at the west side.

In season, rows of heirloom vegetables, flowers and aromatic herbs fill the beds, providing fresh, seasonal produce for the local community. The heritage orchard, planted with traditional varieties of apple and pear, not only preserves rare and historic species but also enhances biodiversity, attracting pollinators and wildlife.  Native berry varieties add to the garden's produce.

At the heart of the garden lies a tranquil wildlife pond, a haven for frogs, dragonflies, and birds. This natural feature supports a rich ecosystem, helping to maintain balance within the garden while offering a peaceful retreat for visitors.

The apothecary garden, with its carefully selected medicinal plants, connects us to ancient herbal traditions, providing natural remedies and botanical infusions. Together, these elements create a vibrant, sustainable space that honours the history of the Walled Garden while embracing a future rooted in organic principles and ecological harmony.

New during 2025: A purpose-built polytunnel to expand our organic production of local varieties of fruit, vegetables and microgreens.  We also plan to experiment with growing local heritage varieties of produce for the local market.

Training and Events: Following in from successful pilots in 2024, we plan to expand our training provision in the Walled garden - sign up to our updates to be the first to know.
